The Power Skills Preschool Program
The Power Skills program extends the existing CLLIP and Project EASE components to preschool students. CLLIP professional development modules in the areas of language and literacy are modified to be developmentally appropriate for preschool students (Ages 3-5). The parent-child component of the Power Skills program, "Building Language Together" was developed by Gail Jordan, (i.e., author of Project EASE) and is designed to foster emergent literacy skills of boys and girls. Components include: - Orientation and Assessment:
Fall kick-off includes orientation to CLLIP process of professional development in language and literacy instruction, Assessment training (use of standardized and criterion-reference assessments), Teacher & Student Survey orientation, Content Standards training, Classroom management planning activities with mentor teacher: learning Center orientation including dramatic play: Introduction Building Language for Literacy and the introduction to school/parent initiative entitled Building Literacy Together. (BLT) - Phonological Awareness and Vocabulary:
Participants will be introduced to the CLLIP's next early childhood professional development, Phonological Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, and Phonemic Awareness. This professional development includes a discussion of global agents of change and the importance of differentiated instruction. Participants are guided to define and understand how auditory processing influence emergent literacy skills as well as how to implement a variety of strategies that target differentiated instruction in PA/PmA/AP and vocabulary skills. - Print Awareness/ Concepts About Print/ Explanatory Talk/Book Reading:
Participants are given the opportunity to share recent successes and challenges experienced in the implementation of the previous Power Skills Preschool instructional strategies. CLLIP Trainers lead participants through a variety of activities that build their understanding of Print Awareness, Concepts About Print, and Explanatory Talk. Participants will also be introduced to several informal assessment tools that target print awareness and the need to incorporate AYP. - Explanatory Talk/Narrative Retelling/Writing:
Participants will be introduced to several criterion reference assessment tools that target narrative retelling and also review the different forms of explanatory talk by participating in activities designed to further their understanding of explanatory talk as one way to extend students' discourse. Teachers in this professional development will become familiar with the role narrative comprehension and retelling play in emergent literacy development, as well as key words and phrases surrounding oral language and narrative retelling, and how prompts are used for 'Story Telling Centers' in classrooms. Near the end of this professional development, teachers are shown how writing emerges as an early predictor of literacy success in school, and exposed to the continuum ranging from scribbling to conventional writing of letters and words.
